Port Arthur and My first wombat

Port Arthur - Old British convict site on Tasmania

This saturday I went to Port Arthur (the historical site which once worked as a colonial prison). It was the first prison the great Brits established in this part of the world. Here they sent pretty much anyone that couldn’t fit the prisons back in the UK. In total about 7000 prisoners passed the gate of the Australian convict site during the nearly 50 years it operated.

It was also here I saw my first wombat. Functioning as a carpet in the house of the old commondant of the prison. Not really what I had in mind when I’ve been on the lookout for this furry animal (looking like a really fat, but brighter beaver).

A wombat can also look like this

I guess the next time I’ll see one it will be more vivid.
