Argentina’s president Cristina Kirchner posted a tweet today where she mocks Chinese official’s accent, replacing r’s with l’s…
Kirchner wrote: “…did they only come for lice and petloleum […sólo vinieron por el aloz y el petlóleo]?”
My first reaction? Only in Argentina. My second? Wait, this has happened to me too.
We’ve all been mocked by the Argentines for our failures to pronounce the d’s softly or roll the r’s properly. It doesn’t matter if it’s our second, third or even fourth language – it’s still funny for the Argies.
Contrary to English and Swedish culture, most Argentines don’t think this is rude. They can mock anyone for their accents, but you must remember you can never (ever) comment on their accent when speaking English. Ever.
Gotta love them.
